I'm going to be a daddy soon and, for those of us who have kids who are still very young, this law is very very scary.
Although this law has been passed in the state of Arkansa, United States, I'm worried that even 1st world country lawmakers can make mistakes like this.
I'm not a lawyer or even politically inclined. But, I think it is safe to assume that lawmakers can think of the most obvious loopholes for a given law, and for some reason(s), this slipped through.
They are planning to fix this mistake, but, like in any law that has been passed, I think this has to go through the whole process again. I'm not really sure how all that law stuff works, but, as long as this still out in the open -- some might just take advantage of it.
The bill reads: "In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."
Infants are younger than 18, right? Obsurd. I know but the law allows it. Let's say a smart-ass kid of age 12 is able to provide an evidence of parental consent. God knows how he did it, but he did it -- hypothetically, it allows it, right?
For the whole story: Law allows kids to marry
